A small group of Ultra-Orthodox Jews from Beit Shemesh (near Jerusalem), has gone wild. Under the pretense of "life of modesty" they have attacked a girl of 8 years old on her way to school because she wasn't dressed according to their dress code. They insist that on public transportation women will sit in the back, and generally prefer women to stay in the shadows (meaning take care of the children AND go to work, since they are busy studying the words of god). As long as they have acted as a sect in Mea-Shearimg (Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem) no one tried to stop them. Now, as they are spreading to other parts of the country, they are trying to force their primitive values and twisted morals on everyone else.

If you're a regular you know my super twin brother Tomer has a collection of his illustration work published recently in a book call OVERKILL. I interviewed him for Calcalist, and tried to find out how come we started at the same genetic code and ended up in two completely different places. You can read the article here (hebrew). If you have a brave hart, I dare you to use google translation. There is also that strip I did about being a twin He's a bit taller.

On a different front The Realist is expanding to Facebook and Twitter, nothing can stop it now, not even the new print shop (hebrew).

Things have been cloudy here in Tel Aviv, but there is some good news too. Three Realist strips made it into The Society of Illustrators Annual (Less is More, Department of Visual Communication and Meeting Toby). Other than that everything is fine, really.

week 70 :: Sgt Shalit is Coming Home

Sgt Gilad Shalit has been in Hamas captivity for more than 5 years. During that time, my son was born, we moved to a new apartment and I started documenting my life in comics form. I did a piece about Shalit in the past (and one about Astronauts).
But today everything changes.A deal was signed with Hamas. More than thousand Palestinians prisoners will be released from Israeli jail in return for Shalit. After a short period of national joy once the announcement was made, the debate in Israel questioned that exchange. Is it worth it?

week 69 :: Fucked Up Generation

I didn't even translate the title for this one because it doesn't mean much in English.
It's a title of a famous Israeli song from the 90's by pop star Aviv Geffen. It means "It's Cloudy Now" and one of the reasons this song got so popular is the catchy line "We are a fucked up generation".
Now, the city of tents is gone, the summer is over. It seemed for a moment that our generation was doing the right thing, then it started raining.

But I have good news too. My brother Tomer has an incredible Art book out called OVERKILL. You should seriously check it out!

Thanks to everyone who showed interest in helping translate. So far we have German, Spanish, French, and maybe Arabic and Greek. I'm trying to work around the technical difficulties and hope for the best. In the meantime, I'm posting process sketches on that thing google+ under Asaf Hanuka.

The "million" protest came and went and I'm back at facing personal current events. This week on cellphone relationships not unlike the iPhone installment a few weeks back. Only this time I'm the victim.

The unmatchable BD artist Gally (French) had an interesting remark that got me thinking about providing a French version for the Realist, in addition to English and Hebrew. Is there anyone out there who can help? even if you choose just one planche and translate it, that would be greatly appreciated.

The housing protest in Israel keeps growing. At the center of Tel Aviv there is now a small colony of young people living independently of the old system, creating something new, that looks ancient.

The times are changing in Israel. A city of tents is being built at the center of Tel Aviv, on Rothschild avenue, by thousands of middle and working class citizens who are unable to afford a decent home or even pay their bills.

the journey has come to an end, or at least the middle. today's installment will be the last of the realist in its current form. what started out as an experiment in desperation became a life saving therapy. today we unpack our stuff in the new place we might one day call home. i want to thank you for coming along for the ride, your comments and observations where incredibly encouraging.

i'll be resting next week and working on a new realist to be presented in two weeks time. it's going to be completely different, but exactly the same. hope to see you then, and meanwhile stay real.
